Moving In? Don't Forget This Complete Cleaning Checklist

Moving into a new home is one of life's most exciting milestones. But before you start arranging furniture and hanging pictures, there's one important task that shouldn't be skipped: a thorough, top-to-bottom cleaning. Even if the previous owners left the place looking tidy, you'd be surprised at what a deep clean can uncover — and eliminate.

This room-by-room checklist will help you make sure your new home is fresh, clean, and truly ready for you and your family.

Why Clean Before Moving In

You might wonder why cleaning is necessary if the home looks clean already. Here are a few reasons:

  • The previous occupants' cleaning standards may differ from yours — what looks clean on the surface may not meet your standards when you look closely
  • Dust and allergens accumulate during the moving and closing process when the home sits empty
  • It's much easier to clean an empty house than one full of your belongings
  • You'll feel better starting fresh in a space that you know is truly clean
  • It's a chance to inspect — cleaning gives you an up-close look at surfaces, fixtures, and finishes that might reveal issues you didn't notice during your walkthrough

Bedroom Checklist

  • Wipe down all surfaces — window sills, shelves, closet rods, and built-in furniture
  • Clean inside closets — vacuum or wipe floors, wipe down shelves and rods, check for any items left behind
  • Clean windows inside and out (if accessible), including tracks and frames
  • Dust and clean ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Clean or replace air vents and registers — remove covers and vacuum inside the duct opening
  • Vacuum or mop floors thoroughly, including corners and along baseboards
  • Wipe down baseboards and door frames
  • Check and clean window blinds or treatments if they were left in place
  • Inspect walls for scuffs, marks, or nail holes that need patching

Bathroom Checklist

  • Scrub and disinfect the toilet — bowl, seat, base, and surrounding floor area
  • Clean the bathtub and/or shower — scrub surfaces, clean grout, check caulking, and remove any soap scum or mineral deposits
  • Clean the sink and vanity — scrub the basin, wipe down the countertop, clean inside cabinets and drawers
  • Clean mirrors with streak-free glass cleaner
  • Disinfect all hardware — faucet handles, doorknobs, towel bars, toilet handle, and light switches
  • Clean exhaust fan — remove the cover and clean the fan blades
  • Scrub floor tiles and grout — pay special attention to corners and around the toilet base
  • Check under the sink for any signs of leaks or water damage
  • Replace the toilet seat if desired — this is a common preference for new homeowners

Kitchen Checklist

  • Clean inside all cabinets and drawers — wipe down shelves, line with shelf liner if desired
  • Clean and disinfect countertops thoroughly
  • Clean inside the refrigerator — shelves, drawers, door seals, and exterior
  • Clean the oven — interior, racks, broiler pan, and exterior
  • Clean the microwave inside and out
  • Clean the dishwasher — run an empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner or vinegar, wipe down the door and seals
  • Clean the range hood and filter — grease can accumulate heavily here
  • Scrub the sink and clean the garbage disposal (run ice cubes and lemon to freshen)
  • Clean behind and under appliances if they can be safely moved
  • Wipe down all hardware — cabinet handles, drawer pulls, faucet, and light switches
  • Clean the floor thoroughly, including under the edge of cabinets and appliances
  • Degrease backsplash tiles and clean grout

Living Area Checklist

  • Dust all surfaces — shelves, mantels, window sills, and built-in features
  • Clean windows inside and out (if accessible), including tracks and screens
  • Dust and clean ceiling fans, light fixtures, and chandeliers
  • Clean or replace air vents and registers
  • Vacuum or mop all floors, including under any built-in furniture
  • Clean baseboards and door frames throughout
  • Wipe down all light switches, outlets, and doorknobs
  • Clean fireplace (if applicable) — sweep out ashes, clean the glass doors, check the damper
  • Vacuum upholstered built-in seating if present
  • Clean sliding glass doors and tracks — Florida homes often have these leading to patios and lanais

Cleaning Tools You'll Need

Make sure you have these essentials on hand before you start:

  • All-purpose cleaner and disinfectant spray
  • Glass cleaner
  • Oven cleaner (if needed)
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • Scrub brushes (various sizes)
  • Microfiber cloths and sponges
  • Mop and bucket
  • Vacuum cleaner with attachments
  • Broom and dustpan
  • Step ladder for ceiling fans and high fixtures
  • Rubber gloves
  • Trash bags
  • Old toothbrush for grout and tight spaces
  • Magic eraser for scuffs on walls
  • Shelf liner for cabinets (optional)

Other Maintenance Tasks for Your New Home

While you're in cleaning and setup mode, take care of these important maintenance items:

HVAC Filters Replace all HVAC air filters with fresh ones. You don't know when they were last changed, and starting with clean filters ensures better air quality and system efficiency. Consider upgrading to HEPA or high-MERV-rated filters if allergies are a concern.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. If the detectors are more than 10 years old, replace the entire unit. Make sure detectors are present on every level of the home and in or near every bedroom.

Plumbing Check Turn on all faucets and flush all toilets to check for leaks, slow drains, or running toilets. Look under sinks for any signs of water damage or active leaks. Run the garbage disposal and dishwasher to make sure they're working properly.

Circuit Breakers Locate your electrical panel and make sure all breakers are labeled. Test the breakers to ensure they work properly and note which breakers control which areas of the home. This information is invaluable during an emergency.

When to Call a Professional

Your move-in cleaning may reveal issues that go beyond what soap and water can address:

  • Persistent stains or odors that suggest previous water damage, mold, or pet issues
  • Signs of pest activity — droppings, damage, or live insects
  • Water stains on ceilings or walls that could indicate roof or plumbing leaks
  • Non-functional fixtures or appliances that weren't identified during your home inspection
  • Concerns about air quality — musty smells or excessive dust could indicate mold or HVAC problems

If you discover any of these issues during your move-in cleaning, don't ignore them. Early detection and professional assessment can prevent small problems from becoming expensive emergencies.
